This gold proof coin is issued by the U.S. Mint in 2022 in honor of the Negro National League (NNL). The NNL was founded in 1920 by Andrew "Rube" Foster. A former baseball player, as well as the owner/manager of the Chicago American Giants, Foster sought to establish a league for African American and Latin American athletes to play ball when they were banned from the major leagues. For his monumental efforts, Foster was posthumously inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981, and the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame in 2021.
This 2022 Negro Leagues Baseball coin was struck at the Mint's branch in West Point, New York.
The five dollar denomination legal tender coin features a dazzling proof finish.
The perfectly graded 21.59 mm diameter coin contains 0.243 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold.
The coin earned the First Strike attribution.

Magnificently Detailed Imagery
Obverse: The obverse is graced with the likeness of Rube Foster, with a replica of his signature below. Inscriptions include "NEGRO LEAGUE BASEBALL," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "2022" and "LIBERTY."
Reverse: A well-known gesture of respect among ball players is demonstrated on the reverse, a hand tipping a cap. As an homage to the Art Deco period in which the NNL was formed, the inscription "THEIR LEGACY PLAYS ON" appears beneath the cap in a distinctive Art Deco lettering style. The design is surrounded by the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "."
